After both types of tendon transfers:
  • The shoulder is placed in a sling for four weeks and physical therapy for passive arm movement is initiated to prevent stiffness.
  • When the sling is removed after four weeks the patient can start using the arm for daily activities.
  • At this time, a physical therapist instructs the patient in active motion and passive motion exercises continue.
  • After two months a biofeedback program begins so that the muscle transfer can be trained to function properly. Therapy usually continues for approximately four months.
  • It can take as long as a year to regain maximum function and relief of symptoms.
