Will winging improve?
In most cases scapular winging will improve, but it may take longer than one year. After this time recovery is less likely.
Will physical therapy improve winging scapula?
Generally, this is not helpful. Since the scapular muscles are not receiving electrical signals from the nerves in order to contract, therapy will not increase function.
Can anything be done to relieve pain and improve function other than surgery?
Sometimes bracing of the scapula can be helpful. The scapula is stabilized against the chest using a specially made brace to prevent it from winging.
If scapular winging does not resolve after one year, will surgery help?
An examination of the shoulder by a shoulder specialist should be able to determine this.
If I have a tendon transfer will I be able to do sports activities after I recover from the surgery?
Yes. Most patients report they are able to play tennis or golf, and even swim. Each patient is different and a return to sports depends on the successful retraining of the transferred muscle.
