The Athletic Trainer has daily interaction with the Steadman Hawkins Physicians. The
athletic trainer fellow assists the attending doctors in seeing patients. Each practice is very diverse in the type of injuries
and patients they will examine, therefore the responsibilities change daily. The athletic trainer fellow works extremely close with
the six orthopedic physician fellows stemming from various orthopedic backgrounds.
Under physician supervision the athletic trainer fellow takes a complete history of the patient and presents this information to the
physician fellow. Collectively they examine radiographs, form a physical exam plan, evaluate the patient, and then presents the
case to the attending doctor.
Duties of each practice differ because each physician has a major specialty. Additional tasks of the athletic training fellow include:
- evaluation of complex musculoskeletal injuries
- taking a thorough history
- managing clinical flow
- ordering plain x-rays and MRI's
- reading x-rays and MRI's
- communicating with patients and physicians
- KT-testing
- casting
- bracing
- ordering ancillary studies
- patient education
- pre and post-operative care
- post-operative dressing changes
The athletic trainer fellow is always the first and last person to see each patient, so their role in the clinic is pivotal
each and every day.
